The Tulane community is getting in gear for Earth Day with a series of environmentally-aware events sponsored by CACTUS and the Tulane Green Club. The events are co-organized by juniors Anne Marie Norman and Suhas Subramanyam.
"We would like to invigorate students, raise environmental awareness and hopefully inspire people at Tulane and in New Orleans to appreciate and enjoy the planet they live on," Norman said, who is also the Hullabaloo sports editor.
Earth Week will kick things off today with the Step it Up! rally being held on the Holy Cross Neighborhood Levee. The rally supports an initiative to reduce energy consumption known as Focus the Nation, and a shuttle is scheduled to leave at 4:45 p.m. from Freret and McAlister streets. E-mail akamin@tulane.edu to reserve a spot on the bus.
The Snowballs for Recycling pledge drive will be held in Pocket Park beginning at 11 a.m. Monday, with free Plum Street Snowballs for any student who signs a pledge committing to the reduce/reuse/recycle lifestyle. For those lacking a sweet tooth, a Farmer's Market shuttle will be leaving from the Freret Street pickup point at 11 a.m. Tuesday, offering students an opportunity to see the effects of sustainable agriculture in their own community.
Wednesday will feature a special panel of guest speakers who will assemble on campus for a discussion of rebuilding and the emerging environmental policies of post-Katrina New Orleans. Panelists will include Micah Walker Parkin, program director of the Alliance for Affordable Energy; Pamela Bingham, the director of Clinton Climate Initiative in New Orleans; Charles Allen, a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and Oliver Thomas, the New Orleans City Council President. The discussion will be moderated by John McLachlan, director of the Center for Bioenvironmental Research at Tulane and Xavier Universities.
Students are encouraged to attend and will have the opportunity to present questions to the panel. A reception will follow.
